Claudia Schiffer has been attacked for offending black people after posing on a magazine cover made up as a black woman. The 39-year-old German supermodel wore black foundation and an afro-style wig in the photograph taken by fashion designer and photographer Karl Lagerfeld.

Lagerfeld had Schiffer made up as a black women in one of six photographs he took while putting together an advertising campaign for the vintage champagne Dom Perignon. The photos were published by German fashion magazine Stern Fotografie when it celebrated its 60th anniversary.

Accusations against Schiffer and Lagerfeld followed from Shevelle Rhule, the fashion editor of a London black lifestyle magazine, Pride. Ms Rhule said:

“It shows poor taste and it's offensive. There are not enough women of colour featured in mainstream magazines. This just suggests you can counteract the problem by using white models. I don't believe they deliberately set out to offend. They obviously see it as being arty and feel that they are pushing boundaries. But clearly no thought has been given to the history behind what they have done and the comparisons it draws with minstrel shows.”

To which I would reply: 'Shevelle, lighten up'. Her comment is the kind that perpetuates raw nerves about race and creates a path of spikey eggshells for people, black and white, to walk on. Society doesn't need race relations zealots, quangocrats or Pride fashion editors lecturing designers (or filmmakers or writers or rap singers…) on what they can or can't do. It's small-minded. Already an online magazine has responded to the photos with conformist knee-jerk political correctness by saying one of the other photos, of Schiffer as an Asian, is “just wrong”, scolding that Lagerfeld should have used more than one model in the interests of racial diversity.

Fashion, like fiction and film and other creative industries, should be free to play with any images it chooses. Did Ms Rhule also take offence at white French actor Gerard Depardieu recently playing mixed-race Alexander Dumas (using black make-up)? Or Eddie Murphy impersonating a white (jewish) person? Or black British actor Adrian Lester who played the white Danish prince, Hamlet? Or the black actor, David Oyelowo, who played white English king Henry VI?

Would she criticise images of Bob Dylan or the Rolling Stones dressed up as women? How about pantomime dames, women actors dressed as men, Eddie Izzard in frock and lipstick, comedians pretending to be children…?

As soon as you get into determining whether blacks can play whites and women can play men but not the other way round, you're proscribing the creative process and engaging in censorship. Clamping down on the arts in that way (even commercial arts like advertising) is as restricting as squashing free speech.

As for Rhule's comment that Lagerfeld and Schiffer were suggesting the photograph of a 'black' Schiffer would substitute for using black models in mainstream magazines – that's just plain foolish. Rhule then seems to have chucked minstrels into the discussion just for shock value.

In fact the photo was one of a series of six in which Lagerfeld was playing with Schiffer's image. Another showed her as a secretary, a third as an Asian woman. In a fourth she was dressed and made up as eighteenth century French queen, Marie Antoinette and in a fifth she was androgynous. The fashion shoot theme was fantasy and imagination. Lagerfeld wanted to play with Schiffer's face and Shiffer's image. He didn't want to use other models. He wasn't trying to portraying racial diversity – he was portraying imaginary Claudia Schiffers. And has every right to.

A spokesman for Lagerfeld responded to Rhule's criticism, saying she was taking them out of context: “The images were designed to reflect different men's fantasies. The pictures were not intended to offend, they were done very creatively and are some of Karl Lagerfeld's favourite images of Claudia. People should not jump to conclusions.”

Yet there are many people with vested interests in Britain and other liberal democracies who make a good living from jumping to conclusions and playing the race card in cases which can only trivialise genuine instances of racism. Political correctness about race and ethnicity has battened onto society like a barnacle on a boat. It would be a democratic step forward if those who have a professional interest in taking offence at 'racism' and other -isms would pick their battles more wisely.

It would also be good if the race relations industry ditched the term “people of colour”. What is it supposed to indicate?! What colour? Black? Dark brown? Sienna? All those and more? Does it imply that white people – with their variously pink, peachy, creamy, olive-toned, ugly red, bluey-white, brown or orangey skin – have no colour? Why aren't whites called “people of non-colour” then? Or “people of no-colour”?

Black and white are just words. They're quick and easy terms to use for those who want or need to indicate skin colour and they're neutral. People (like Ms Rhule perhaps) who want to take offence at one (and not the other) always will. But they're misguided. Countering racism is always worth doing. But cranking up and maintaining raw nerves unnecessarily does no-one any good. It just increases division between black and white and injects a zealous, scolding tone into debate which would benefit from more freedom, less 'sensitivity' and – in a case like the Schiffer/Lagerfeld photos – a bit of playfulness.

‘Alice Springs’
June 12 2010 – January 30 2011

With the exhibition ‘Alice Springs’, the Berlin-based Helmut Newton Foundation will be presenting as of June 12th, 2010 the first retrospective of June Newton internationally.

In 1970, June Newton started her own photographic work under the pseudonym Alice Springs; this has been exhibited regularly at the Helmut Newton Foundation since 2005, namely in “June’s Room.” The current retrospective in Berlin provides with a range of approximately 250 works a comprehensive look at the four decades that span her work, presenting photographs from advertising and fashion as well as nudes and portraits.

Her own photographic oeuvre began with a bout of influenza suffered by Helmut Newton in Paris in 1970. June Newton had her husband show her how to handle the camera and light meter and in his place photographed an advertisement for the French cigarette brand Gitanes. The portrait of the smoking model would be the jumpstart of a new career. In the early 1970s, Alice Springs shot several campaigns for the French hair stylist Jean Louis David; the photographs appeared under her byline as full-page ads in renowned fashion magazines. 1974 saw the first Alice Springs cover image adorning French Elle.

By this time she had also received innumerable commissions for portraits, some of which have become iconic. The roster of artists, actors and musicians depicted by Alice Springs over the last 40 years reads like a “who’s who” of the international cultural scene on both sides of the Atlantic. Many portraits were magazine assignments from Paris to Los Angeles; others resulted from private initiative.

Alice Springs does more than document the appearance of celebrities and anonymous contemporaries; she captures their charisma, their aura. Her eye for people is mostly concentrated on people’s faces. Occasionally she narrowly frames her subjects in a half- or three-quarters’ length portrait, where the hands receive special attention as well. It might be that her deep knowledge of acting helps, how to simultaneously look at and beyond the human façade. This is particularly evident in her double portraits, in which the protagonists’ interaction is perfectly staged.

There is a certain sense of familiarity in her images; actually they oscillate between distance and intimacy. In her subtle portraits we encounter the haughty stance alongside natural self-confidence as well as the shy glance. Dramatic poses are seldom, and the process occurs without grand gestures on the part of the photographer. Her images are visual commentaries that interpret the photographed.

I made new Images in the last months – please tell me what they tell you:

A Katzen Stroll by kamikaze productions

The birth of a family's first child is an event of such significance that most parents will want to document as much of that time as possible. Maternity photography is an ideal way to capture the magic of that momentous event. Maternity portraits are a wonderful addition to any baby album and parents should try to include at least one set in the chronicle of their first born's life. There are, however, several points to consider and keep in mind when preparing for maternity portraits.

Timing

When planning your maternity photography session, its best to try and schedule the shoot between week thirty-one and thirty-six. If this is not convenient it's wise to keep your photographer constantly updated with your plans so that you can set the shoot up at short notice. You don't want to lose the optimal window of opportunity! Maternity photography sessions are not easily re-scheduled if missed due to the nature of birth.

General Preparation

When planning maternity photography there are several points that need to be prearranged to ensure a smooth and stress free session for the best memorable maternity portraits. Many parents want at least a couple of family photos included in the maternity portrait session. Everyone involved such as grandparents and close friends need to be included in all phases of the planning to avoid any additional stress on the day of the session.

The parents and maternity photographer should discuss the overall style of the maternity portraits thoroughly in the initial stages of planning. This normally happens during your pre-consultation. Points such as photographic style, sets and props, clothing and group details should be decided on early in the process. Stress free maternity photography has been mentioned several times here and is an extremely important point. It's important that everyone be as relaxed and calm as possible to ensure a serene and relaxing ambiance for the photo session.

Maternity Photography Planning Specifics

1. Clothing

Deciding on clothing is a critical part of the maternity photography planning process. Many mothers want to pose topless or nude and they need to discuss this with the photographer early to establish their willingness to shoot a nude shoot. However, nude maternity shoots are pretty common nowadays. Clothing also plays a role in the photographer's preparation for the maternity portrait session.

2. Maternity Photography Props

With maternity photography props can be add and can add significantly to the overall feel of the results or distract. Toys, items of clothing, baby furniture and accessories all make great additions to the session. If you want more of a lifestyle session then most likely you'll forgo the usual props so that main focus is on you.

If you do decide to go with a more traditional maternity photography session, most maternity photographers usually have various maternity photography props available.

3. Maternity Photography Setting

There are usually two locations chosen for maternity photography. A studio environment or the home. Studios are usually used where a more traditional style of maternity photography is desired. The photographer is responsible for the setup for the maternity portraits and preparing the studio.

The more commonly chosen setting is the home as it lends a far more intimate and familiar feeling. Just be sure that your that the home is prepared for the upcoming shoot. Make sure the baby's room is set up as well. The photographer most likely will want to take a few shoots in the room as well as throughout the home.

The maternity photographer will likely arrive 30 minutes before the session starts to look around and find the best light in the home if they are a natural light (available light) photographer.

Maternity Photography Do's and Dont's

A good photographer will guide everyone smoothly through the maternity photography process, but here are a couple of pointers to keep in mind for the shoot.

  • Try and avoid wearing clothes with elastic seams as they leave marks on the skin.
  • Avoid trying any new funky hairstyles before your session.
  • Avoid using oily lotions on your skin prior to the shoot. They tend to reflect flash and fill lighting and can spoil shots.
  • Try and have a manicure prior to the shoot as your hands are often the focal point of many of the photos.
  • Lip gloss or moisturizer makes a big difference in close up head and shoulder shots.
  • Make arrangements to contain unruly pets during the shoot.
  • Avoid wear distracting jewelery or clothing during the shoot.
  • Get the hubby to join you in a few photos. They make for great portraits.
  • Relax, have fun and trust your photographer!

This may all sound like maternity photography is a nightmare, but when you consider the value of maternity portraits the preparation is well worth it, and you'll have amazing maternity portraits to share with the new edition to the family.

This is the second part in a series showcasing the images taken from performances at The Cutting Room Studios in New York City for KEXP’s Morning Show with John Richards.
[The set of images from the first installment can be found here.] These posts are a celebration of the music in the moment and our way of helping to showcase the talented musicians and photographers who share their art with us.

This installment includes indie-folk/alt-country band Phosphorescent, up-beat garage-pop group Electric Tickle Machine, French pop stars Phoenix, teen indie-punk siblings Tiny Masters of Today, fuzzy shoegazers Autodrone, manic indie-rock band ArpLine, dreamgazers ZAZA, and California indie-rock band CHIEF.

But, wait! There’s more! We also enjoyed the following fresh, hot bands: Seattle indie-rockers The Blakes, Australian atmosphere rock band The Temper Trap, Alec Ounsworth (frontman of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah), New Zealand dance punk group Bang! Bang! Eche!, London electro-rockers The Big Pink, California garage rockers The Willowz, Boston rockers Dylan in the Movies, and London indie-pop group The Clientele.

Technology always captivates consumers. Some of the best gadgets and technological advancements are introduced each year in the International CES in Vegas, really addressing new meaning in pioneer and intelligent devices.

The best gadgets announced at CES 2010, according to experts and consumer reviews, are the following:

a) Lenovo IdeaPad U1 Hybrid

Featuring fascinating notebooks with IdeaPad U1 Hybrid on the lead, Lenovo has really made a striking impression at this year's CES. Being the first PC in the industry that allows users to remove the screen and switch to a six-screen multitouch tablet that functions independently with its own processor and operating system, the IdeaPad U1 integrates Lenovo's Hybrid Switch technology allowing both PCs to function perfectly on the two processors effortlessly.

Featuring textured surface on the inside and a sleek, transparent dark red cover that cannot but capture the consumer's eye, the shiny round notebook comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon ARM processor in tablet mode, 11.6″ HD LED display, 4GB of memory RAM and 160GB storage capacity on the SSD running on Windows 7 Home Premium. When pulled out of its showcase, Lenovo switches to Skylight UI that functions as a detached tablet with an ARM processor running alongside Lenovo's customized Linux Skylight operating system.

The base, when detached, continues to work as its own Core 2 Duo SU41 opening up potential for the U1 to truly act as two devices in one. Both laptop and tablet modes support over 5 hours of 3G Web browsing and up to 60 hours of 3G standby. The tablet's edge-to-edge glass is comfortable and the chromed edges tempting, but some areas that need attention are the keyboard (too flat for Lenovo's standards), and perhaps ergonomics (notebook weight is 3.7 pounds, tablet weight is 1.6 pounds).

The Lenovo IdeaPad U1 Hybrid is not expected to hit the market before June 1st, 2010, while its suggested retail price is $999.

b) Motorola Backflip smartphone

Scheduled for a global release at the Q1 2010, the Backflip comes with a 528-MHz Qualcomm MSM 7200A processor on Google Android 1.5 OS, 3.1″ touchscreen that natively supports 320 x 480 resolution, Wi-Fi, 3G and 5-megapixel camera. Besides, the device supports Moto Blur social-networking add-ons, Bluetooth and a 2GB memory card that can be expanded up to 32GB.

However, the best asset of the Backflip is its unique design. When it is closed, both the screen and the keyboard face out. The device can be flipped in a V-shape or totally flat to watch a movie or it can be used as a picture frame or alarm clock. When the device is open, it allows users to navigate on its touchscreen or use a trackball for navigation.

c) Sony HDR-XR550V camcorder

Featuring a 240GB HDD, 3.5″ LCD with 1920 x 1080 Full HD video recording, 12-megapixel still image capture with wide angle Sony G Lens with 10x optical zoom and Direct Copy feature, Sony HDR-XR550V camcorder is a unique camera that enable users to capture astonishingly smooth video from wide angle to full telephoto shooting.

Besides, the HDR-XR550V is a great device to experience low-light sensitivity with enhanced image clarity and considerably reduced grain due its revolutionary 'Exmor R' CMOS sensor. Designed exclusively for compact cameras and camcorders, the 'Exmor R' CMOS sensor is intended for shooting video in lower lighting conditions with superior results. Also, the Sony G Lens offers enhanced optical performance delivering bright, accurate color reproduction and sharp, astonishingly detailed images.

d) Panasonic VT25 Plasma HDTV

Panasonic announced the release of the new plasma VIERA VT25 Series that is expected to hit the market in the spring of 20102 and offers users the full HD 3D capability. The set will include one pair of 3D glasses for an unforgettable 3D experience and an active LC shutter system. What is even more impressive than offering the 3D glasses – at a time that no other manufacturer provides them – is that the left and the right lens of the glasses lightens and darkens successively and too quickly to be perceived, while the TV displays the corresponding left and right-eye-specific images at the same time. The result is Panasonic's 'Full HD 3D' content of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels for each eye.

Besides, the set features Skype video calling, Wi-Fi connection (optional), the option to add Pandora, Twitter, Netflix and Fox Sports to own content through VieraCast interactive suite and infinite Black Pro, among others.

If you shlep a heavy laptop on trips just to get your email, do a little bit of web browsing or write some notes, this is for you. You just put the Jornada in your pocket or briefcase and attach the phone cable to its handy built in modem. The battery lasts so long (sometimes 8 hours) that you can travel for several days without even taking the power adapter. The whole system weighs only about 1 lb. The keyboard is OK but might be problematic if you have fat fingers.

Although you can download Word or PowerPoint documents from your desktop and carry them around, the graphics are not good enough for technical presentations. However if you use mainly plain text and your PowerPoint presentations are mainly big pie charts and so on, this is another great feature. I found out that HP sells a VGA adapter card for the Jornada. This little plug in card lets you download your MS PowerPoint presentation into the little travel computer and then output it to a VGA monitor or projector with graphics up to 768×1024. So not only can I carry the Jornada on trips to get my email, but I can also download my presentation (up to about 16 MB) and output it to the client’s projector or monitor. Since the presentation comes from the computer’s memory, it is very fast. Great!

The FIFA World Cup, the Super Bowl of world soccer, is just around the corner. While many Americans take their children to play soccer on Saturdays in the park, most Americans do not carry the passion for FIFA's World Cup, especially when it is compared the NFL's Super Bowl, MLB's World Series or the NBA'S Finals. To celebrate the beginning of the FIFA World Cup, use this primer to get you started on the right foot for this cup series.

The FIFA World Cup started back in 1924, according to FIFA, when soccer was included in the Olympics. The International Olympic Committee decided that organization of the soccer event should be done by a FIFA, and they have been the organizers since. While they were to recognize the Olympics as a world championship, the President of FIFA, Jules Rimet, also wanted to see a Championship run solely by FIFA. In 1930, the first World Cup opened in Uruguay, but turnout was reduced due to the distance Europe's major teams had to travel by ship.

As a result of the long voyage, only four European teams participated in the event. This damaged the pride of the host country, Uruguay, as they had won both the 1924 and 1928 Olympic championship, and they now felt like they were being shunned by the community. As a result, Uruguay, who had also won the World Cup, refused to play in the 1934 World Cup. They missed only one World Cup, though, and they have participated every year since.

The event has grown immensely over the years, and with the advent of mass media, the audience has grown with it. The original World Cup could only be viewed by those at the location, and reports were transmitted by wire to news outlets around the world. With the economies of the world collapsing, though, it was difficult to make headway. Skip ahead to 2006's television broadcast, and the worldwide total viewership reached 26.29 billion cumulative viewers for all matches, and, on average, 259 million people tuned in to watch each match.

The event is organized as a series of tournaments held by the regional FIFA Confederations, which run the rules and regulations on a geographic-based scale. These regional tournaments act as feeders to the main World Cup, which in 2010, will be held in South Africa. The qualifying teams will be set into groups, and a series of matches will be played between the teams of the group, much like conferences in the National Football League. The leaders of each conference will then be seeded into tournament brackets, taking the top two teams from each group. From there, they progress like any other tournament bracket, with a single knockout elimination. The one exception, obviously, is the Semi-finals losers, who square off to determine third and fourth place.

This tournament, in 2010, will take place in South Africa, and the games will be played in various cities across the small nation. It also marks the 80th year of international competition in a sport which relies heavily on the individual, and team efforts, as opposed to money and technology. As the eyes of the world are cast on to South Africa, the only question remaining on anyone's mind is, “Are they ready for us?”

With St. Mary’s capturing Class 3A girls soccer last night, there are just six state championships left to be handed out. Tonight, three of those will be awarded.

4A girls soccer: No. 2 Valor Christian vs. No. 4 Wheat Ridge

5 p.m., Dick’s Sporting Goods Park

Wheat Ridge (16-1-2) opened some eyes with its upset of No. 1 Lewis-Palmer in the semifinals. No, not because the Farmers simply pulled off the upset — because they did so in a convincing 4-0 fashion.

Sure, Wheat Ridge is the defending 4A champion. But Lewis-Palmer came into the game 18-0-0 and sported 11 shutouts on the season. The Rangers had surrendered more than one goal just four times all season.

Then, in Saturday’s first half, things went from scoreless to 3-0 Wheat Ridge. In a four-minute span.

Yes, Wheat Ridge can score in bunches. (Its 118 goals on the season are third-best across all classifications.) The Farmers pepper the net with shots, too — in their second-round win over Longmont, they fired 25 on net.

Wheat Ridge’s offensive attack is precisely the reason this matchup is so intriguing: Valor Christian (17-1-0) had a state-best 15 shutouts. In fact, the Eagles have given up just five goals all season, and are currently riding a 12-game scoreless streak.

Valor Christian is wonderful at limiting shots. Its goalies have faced just 10 this entire postseason.

Players to watch:

• Annie Kunz, Wheat Ridge. Gatorade Player of the Year. 11 goals, three assists in playoffs.

• Carly Nelson, Wheat Ridge. Four goals, three assists in playoffs.

• Hannah Van Wetter, Wheat Ridge. Three shutouts, 16 saves in playoffs.

• Madison Meyers, Valor Christian. Seven goals in playoffs.

• Abby Elliot, Valor Christian. Four goals in playoffs.

• Kenzie Averill, Valor Christian. Four shutouts, nine saves in playoffs.

Girls lacrosse: No. 1 Cherry Creek vs. No. 2 Denver East

7 p.m., University of Denver’s Peter Barton Stadium

Cherry Creek is in search of its eight girls lacrosse title. Denver East is in search of its first. Yet despite the difference in history, the two teams have had remarkably similar seasons.

They are both in the top three in the state in scoring (Creek is No. 2 with 302 goals, East is third with 281). They’ve both cruised through the postseason (combined aggregate scores of the two teams’ games: 117-50). And they’re both led by a three-headed scoring machine.

For Creek (18-0), it’s the trio of Division I signees Kameryn Downing (84 goals, 25 assists), Shelby Barrett (50 and 36) and Annie Anton (43 and 53). East (17-1) features Maxwell Blair (46 goals, 32 assists), Lizzie Larson (46 and 28) and Kelley McCarroll Gilbert (40 and 25).

The two teams played earlier this month, a 14-10 Creek win. That game was 7-7 at the half before the Bruins pulled away. Downing had five goals for Creek, while Barrett had three goals and four assists.

This, in short, is the championship game most everyone thought we would get when the season started. Now it’s here, and it needs only to live up to the hype.

5A girls soccer: No. 2 Fairview vs. No. 5 Arapahoe

7:30 p.m., Dick’s Sporting Goods Park

The old saying is that teams learn the most from a loss. In the case of Arapahoe, it seems the Warriors have made the most of an 0-2-1 skid late in the regular season.

Surprisingly, Arapahoe (15-2-2) may have announced to the 5A world that the ship was righted in another tie — 1-1 with Cherry Creek, the playoff’s eventual No. 1 seed, that ended the regular season.

In the minds of many, Arapahoe had been the team to beat before the skid. Suddenly, Arapahoe was scary again, and just as the playoffs were starting.

The Warriors then crushed Brighton in the first round, took care of Heritage in the second, beat a loaded Air Academy squad in overtime in the quarterfinals, and finally took down Rocky Mountain in the semifinals.

They are now rolling again, in search of their 10th girls soccer championship — most of any program in the state. (No other school has more than four titles.)

Opposite Arapahoe is second-ranked Fairview (17-2-0), an under-hyped second seed.

The Knights are another team that’s learned from a loss — a loss, in fact, at the hands of Arapahoe on March 13 that left Fairview at 2-2-0 to start the season. (Katie Marstiller had the lone goal in the second half — the only goal she scored all season — off an assist from Laura Feehs.)

Since that game, Fairview has won 15-straight by a combined score of 68-3. Included in the streak is a 2-0 win over semifinalist Rocky Mountain, and wins over Poudre (6-0), Legacy (4-2) and Horizon (3-1) — all playoff teams.

Then there was the 7-0 quarterfinal win over Smoky Hill, another upstart that many thought might make the semifinals, which was as impressive as any win in these playoffs.

Fairview, which is seeking its first-ever girls soccer title, is third in 5A with 75 goals, and has allowed just six goals all season. That adds up to a Class-best plus-69 in goal differential.

Players to watch:

• Laura Feehs, Arapahoe. Seven goals, two assists in playoffs.

• Shannon Koundourakis, Arapahoe. Three goals, three assists in playoffs.

• Molly McGough, Arapahoe. One shutout, 13 saves in playoffs.

• Annie Stuller, Fairview. Four goals, five assists in playoffs.

• Nikola Machalek, Fairvew. Three goals, one assist in playoffs.

• Casey Thayer, Fairview. Four shutouts, 18 saves in playoffs.

Elsewhere in the world of preps:

More champions from yesterday: Arapahoe won 5A girls golf, while Regis Jesuit took 4A. Individual champions were Overland’s Somin Lee and Salida’s Emily Wood. More on Wood’s win, here and here. … Here’s a good preview of the 5A girls soccer championship from Fairview’s perspective. … More on St. Mary’s 3A soccer title. … Four Summit seniors will move on to play college rugby. BrieAnna Barto will play for two-time defending champion Penn State.

One of the most controversial decisions relating to 2010 FIFA Cup (June 11 – July 11 in South Africa) is relating to its implementation of goal-line technology. Critics are calling this the dumbest decision in soccer refereeing technology, as it would have allowed a goal to accurately be determined as a goal instantaneously by computerized chips. Proponents of the rule hail this decision as instrumental in keeping soccer a human-oriented sport not focused or inclusive of any type of technology. Nonetheless, 90% of voters in a FIFPro poll stated that they would like to see the implementation of accurate goal-line technology in soccer.

The very few supporters of this ruling (1 in 10 soccer fans, as well as FIFA executives) favor pure human interaction in the game with absolutely no technological interference whatsoever. This would be a great platform to stand on, by declaring that sports should be human-only. However, what proponents do not realize is that this technology does not intrude on the game at all. A device is placed on the goal, which would then give the answer of whether or not the goal was made. Put simply: there is no intrusion, simply answers.

So, why is FIFA denying instrumental technology? The answer is fear. The FIFA executives are afraid that technology is going to take over everything, even soccer. They are afraid things are going to end up like Terminator: first it starts with the goal-line, and next thing you know the robots are going to take over the world and not let us play soccer! What was going through their heads?

What FIFA also fails to realize is that everything being used in soccer is technology. The soccer ball being kicked is a piece of technology. The goal being kicked into, was once thought of and invented as a piece of technology. The white chalk used to define the goal-box is technology. Anything made by humans is technology. So why are they allowed? Because they aid in a better, more fair and fun game. Hence, goal-line technology will soon be implemented in other leagues, whether or not the dull witted FIFA committee will sooner or later.

Fans understand that there is no intrusion in the game, yet the people like FIFA General Secretary Jerome Valcke saying “Technology should not enter the game. We should trust and keep football as a human game” does not help the sport idealize. Instead, what we have is a fear to accept new and better ideas. The world changes, life changes, the universe changes, and soccer is no exception.
